Cine-Excess release 2020 line-up

Cine-Excess is organised in association with Birmingham City University and the Black Sands Educational Project and is an online conference, streamed festival and screening season going ahead in 2020.

Cine-Excess 2020 represents the 14th annual international film festival and conference on global cult film cultures. It brings together international filmmakers, critics and scholars for a series of talks, interviews and UK premieres/exclusive screenings.

The guests of honour to Cine-Excess include screen legend Pam Grier (Jackie Brown, Coffy, Scream Blacula Scream). Pam will be discussing her career and linking it to key issues of diversity as raised by this year’s theme of ‘Representations as Weapons: Cult Film and the Politics of Resistance’.

Pam Grier will be conducting a live Streamed Interview and Q&A and receiving her Cine-Excess Lifetime Achievement Award on Friday 6th November between 6.30-8.30pm UK time.

Alongside Pam Grier, Cine-Excess are welcoming back the contemporary horror filmmaking duo Jennifer and Sylvia Soska (Rabid [2019] and American Mary). Having received their Cine-Excess award at the 2019 event, the inspirational Soska sisters return to the festival in their new role as BCU Fellows in International Cinema Practices.

Running throughout the daytime slots of Cine-Excess 2020 is the three-day conference Representations as Weapons: Cult Film and the Politics of Resistance.

The Cine-Excess 2020 screening season also includes UK film premieres, exclusive screenings and two upcoming releases from the new Cine-Excess Digital Film Channel. See full line-up details and ticket link below:

Leicester Square didn’t host one particular UK premiere back in the 90s - but the city of Leicester in the Midlands sure as hell did. Holy cinema, Batman!

I’ve mentioned this before in reviews for Midlands Movies; reviewing low budget, independently made films requires a change in mindset. There’s a level of compromise, with allowances made for the odd rough-around-the-edges performance or some shaky effects work.

After an unexpected stroke, former Judge ‘Stefan’ is forced into an assisted living facility. Whilst there, he is forced into sadistic encounters with another psychopathic resident and his vicious puppet companion.

Filmmakers would kill for a scene as recognisable as the exploding head scene early into Scanners. A moment so sudden and exciting that it was shown out-of-context in place of a trailer in some regions, and has been a horror touchstone, even for those who haven’t seen the film.
