Alph-FUN-a-bet! with Imagination Jack

Directed by James Pyle

2024

James Pyle’s prolific output has seen the filmmaker dip his toe into a number of animated pools and genres over the years and he returns once more with comedy sketch short Alph-FUN-a-bet! with Imagination Jack.

In this new 3-minute film, James Pyle stars as a live-action character called Imagination Jack - a role what can only be described as an over-the-top (annoying?) American children’s TV presenter.

Jack is here to teach kids their ABCs, starting with ‘A’ and including as many words (as difficult as they would be for a preschooler) beginning with that letter.

And before long, he’s become “Jumpin’ Jack” - as a cartoon army drill instructor demands some physical activity from the put-upon host. Although, it has to be said, the Army man doesn’t last too long indeed as he’s annihilated in an A-Bomb attack.

A regular nominee and a 2021 award-winner at our very own Midlands Movies Awards, James’ skill is as much about his acting and voices as it is about the animated drawing. And here he combines both to excellent effect with added body comedy too.

With a wide-range of classic and modern influences, the filmmaker’s humour continues to be very much tongue-in-cheek with a big slice of parody on the side.

And with Pyle’s mad blonde wig, saucy red pantaloons and innuendo-strewn performance, it is a lot of fun and apes the overly sincere yet blathering presenters of the past.

On the technical side, Pyle gets his real-life actor to interact with the drawings which works well. And a VHS-overlay effect provides a suitable 70s/80s videotape vibe on top of this - one that’s probably been recorded and re-recorded over and over again.

In the end, it’s a fun and pleasing USA-infused 3-minutes mixing a seedy Sesame Street with added inappropriate American Army antics. And it successfully combines his usual satirical skills with a unique take on a particular genre, to once more create another ace and absurd animation.

They say a cup of tea can solve everything. In Charles Strider’s debut short, A Glass House, it might not solve everything, but it can at least be the starting point for a conversation. This is a beautiful piece of work, shot on film in a 4:3 ratio, at a gorgeous location in King’s Norton, with a tight, naturalistic script that delves into difficulties around talking about our mental health.
