Midlands Spotlight – East Midlands producers New Tropic Pictures looking for scripts, directors and partners

A new impact-driven team of producers based in the East Midlands are looking for new scripts, directors and partnerships.

New Tropic Pictures is a feature film production start-up founded by recent graduates Floyd Parker-Horwell, Fletcher Smith, Jack Stokes and Amelia Curwen at the University of Derby.

Committed to reshaping the film landscape in the East Midlands, the company has quickly gained recognition for their professionalism having produced over 12 shorts and secured budgets of up to £11,000 through sponsorships from local businesses.

Notable collaborations include industry professionals such as Graham Cole from ITV's The Bill and Sir Tony Robinson. Filming in locations like Chatsworth House and coordinating high-speed vehicle stunts, from an early stage in their journey, they have established themselves as outside-the-box thinkers.

The company's founding members come from a diverse range of commercial backgrounds and having now graduated, they are passionate about enhancing the film industry in the East Midlands.

Their aim is to produce a feature film out of Derby and are actively seeking partnerships with talented and experienced writers, directors, and organisations. As a team, they aim to champion a director and writer for their first feature film project.

And the start-up hopes to strategically seek collaborations with the University of Derby and various local organisations in the Midlands region, to offer opportunities to students, graduates, and passionate individuals eager to contribute.

“The long-term vision is to see the East Midlands become an attractive destination for larger studios to come and produce movies here. The growth of the film industry in the area promises internal economic growth, generating meaningful creative job opportunities, and external benefits such as bolstering tourism, travel, hospitality, catering and more”.

But this venture hopes to extend beyond film enthusiasts. “It's an opportunity for all artists, musicians, creative engineers, and altruistic investors passionate about putting the region on the industry’s map. The company envisions the potential economic and cultural impact that the growth of the film industry in the East Midlands could bring, drawing parallels with the success story of Screen Yorkshire”.
