Midlands Spotlight - STOP

New short film STOP has been produced by Apollo Productions and the film, which has been created by a group of Midlands students, is also to get an online and cinema premiere in the region in November.

The production crew is made up of a team of independent filmmakers studying at De Montfort University in Leicester.

The five-minute long film is directed and written by Ted Clarke and the team have categorised the short as a "psychological mystery film, presenting an unexpected reunion between two old friends that is not what it seems".

Shot quickly in the span of just a week, the short was produced with a specific focus on having a nostalgic, film noir aesthetic and as cinematic a finish as possible.

And all of this was achieved despite only having a cast and crew of six people to work with.

The film’s planned release will be online for free via the YouTube platform at 12:00pm on the 18th of November 2022.

But in addition, its first screening will be just a week later at a Student Film Showcase in the filmmaker’s home city of Leicester.

The Phoenix Cinema will screen the short along with others on 21st November 2022 starting from 18:00pm.

Catch the trailer above and the production team have also released a brand-new poster and still from the film (below).

I’ve mentioned this before in reviews for Midlands Movies; reviewing low budget, independently made films requires a change in mindset. There’s a level of compromise, with allowances made for the odd rough-around-the-edges performance or some shaky effects work.

After an unexpected stroke, former Judge ‘Stefan’ is forced into an assisted living facility. Whilst there, he is forced into sadistic encounters with another psychopathic resident and his vicious puppet companion.

Filmmakers would kill for a scene as recognisable as the exploding head scene early into Scanners. A moment so sudden and exciting that it was shown out-of-context in place of a trailer in some regions, and has been a horror touchstone, even for those who haven’t seen the film.

Old Guy suggests that being a hitman is a young man’s game but could the same could be asked of action film directors? Well, possibly given what’s on show in this sadly pedestrian action comedy.
