Midlands Spotlight – New Afro Goblin animation from Thomas Crook

12 years after their last movie was released, Thomas Crook's animated "Stupid agent" heroes have finally returned for a behind the scenes look at what goes on in their top secret base.

Thomas Crook is a Nottingham based filmmaker specialising in animation. We first featured Crook on our website back in 2014 and it’s been a pleasure crossing paths with him at several of the region’s best comic-cons.

Making hand-drawn short animated films including the award-winning spy spoof series Afro Goblin and Chums, the character is described as a “disco dwelling stupid agent and his one man army Bullion Bulldozer”.

And Thomas Crooks says the new episode of Afro Goblin and Chums has been worked on “off and on between the comic-cons over the past few years and has finally been finished!”

Completed in March of this year, Thomas was planning on a big screen premiere with other short films at Derby Quad’s Five Lamps Films showcase and at Nottingham’ Broadway Cinema for its local Short Stack programme.

He goes on to explain, “But like a certain other secret agent movie its big screen release has been delayed somewhat...which inspired the poster”.

However, the film is now complete and Thomas has decided to release the film online which you can watch on the YouTube link below.

The animator has also extended the deadline for a competition he is running until the end of December this year. He’s asking young and old who may have more time owing to lockdown to make one of his cardboard character builds for a chance to win a prize. Finally, the filmmaker adds, “There’s also a Facebook fan club to join, a Twitter page to follow and there's even an online shop where you can get cool merchandise”.

They say a cup of tea can solve everything. In Charles Strider’s debut short, A Glass House, it might not solve everything, but it can at least be the starting point for a conversation. This is a beautiful piece of work, shot on film in a 4:3 ratio, at a gorgeous location in King’s Norton, with a tight, naturalistic script that delves into difficulties around talking about our mental health.
