Midlands directors take their film to Frightfest

midlandsmovies • October 8, 2020
A new feature film hailing from two Midlands directors is about to launch with a world premiere at Fright Fest this coming Halloween.

You can catch The World We Knew on October 24th at the famous film festival which has already been described in the press as an “eerily unsettling heist movie” with a “killer soundtrack”.

The World We Knew is the debut feature from film collective Powis Square Pictures, an award winning production team who have previously worked with Mick Jones (The Clash), Alice Lowe (Prevenge) and Jack Bond (Dali In New York, Separation).

They hope to turn the contemporary British gangster movie on its head with the film being a stylish neo-noir blending pitch black humour and creeping dread with a touch of macabre surrealism.

More Aki Kaurismäki than Guy Ritchie, it’s promoted as Samuel Beckett meets Paranormal Activity, Harold Pinter meets Poltergeist. There are gangsters and there are ghosts.

The World We Knew is an entirely independently financed feature film and is directed by WW Jones and Luke Skinner. Both co-directors are from the Midlands (Redditch and Nottingham) and the writer Kirk Lake was born in Leamington Spa.

“Though we all have moved away we consider our Midlands roots to be an integral part of what made us filmmakers”.

The World We Knew stars Struan Rodger (Kill List, Save Me, Dr Who), Johann Myers (Yardie, The Wheel of Time) and Finbar Lynch (Treadstone, Proof) and marks the debut feature film appearance of former model Alexander Wells. The main cast is completed by co-writer Kirk Lake, who has previously worked with Nick Cave. The film soundtrack has been composed by cult French band The Limiñanas.

The World We Knew is an entirely independently financed feature film and is directed by WW Jones and Luke Skinner. It was produced by Andy Orr for Powis Square Pictures and shot on location in a real haunted house in Marks Tey, Essex.

The World We Knew (UK 2020) directed by WW Jones & Luke Skinner. Produced by Andy Orr for Powis Square Pictures. Written by Kirk Lake & WW Jones. Featuring Struan Rodger, Johann Myers, Finbar Lynch. Running time 78mins.
