Midlands film Good Grief to star Vicky McClure

Good Grief is a new Midlands short film dealing with the agony of losing a child. Following four women through their grieving process, the film aims to show how they deal with the unbearable pain of loss.

Made by Sirloin Films in Nottinghamshire the film is planning to be shot in 2021 and will star Vicky McClure, known for her famous roles in BBC series Line of Duty and in Shane Meadows’ This is England film and series.

Rob Sharp from Sirloin films goes on to explain. “Casting Vicky McClure was such a massive achievement for us and I still have to regularly pinch myself. She is literally one of the finest actors in the country, so obviously to have someone of her class and talent means so much to all of us”.

“The fact that she believes in the script and agreed to the part really cements what we are doing and has pushed us to produce a film worthy of her involvement”, adds Rob.

The script hopes to sensitively show how these characters and their bereavement and deals with the hard-hitting topics of miscarriage, stillbirth and SIDS.

“If we can help to start conversations with this film, then we will have achieved our goal”, says Rob.

The film will come with a warning given its subject matter but the filmmakers also plan to link to a number of charities who specialise in information and support. “We are connected to The Miscarriage Association and we're in talks to link with a number of other charities as well. This duty of care is at the core of this project”.

Writing the script with two of his best friends in mind, Rob hopes they can deliver a film that honours and pays tribute to those who have suffered such a loss. And as well as the usual levels of research for the cast and their characters, they also have a midwife consultant to ensure authenticity for all of the medical/hospital scenes.

Rob goes on to discuss the casting process. “Inclusion and diversity have played a big part in our casting process, most importantly because it's something that all filmmakers should work hard for. I don't know how many films Sirloin will make but every casting will now be held this way. I think the industry is improving but there is still a long way to go before everyone is on a level field”.

“Grassroots, small independent filmmakers can play a massive part in this and it's something that we are extremely passionate about. We also want to show that grief affects everyone, no matter what your background is”.

Also on the production team is Sophie Black who will be executive producing, who Rob met a few years ago at the prestigious Beeston film festival.

And as we head into winter Rob and his team have launched a crowdfunder on 16th November with the plan to still shoot early next year. Click on the IndieGoGo link below to help get the project moving:

They say a cup of tea can solve everything. In Charles Strider’s debut short, A Glass House, it might not solve everything, but it can at least be the starting point for a conversation. This is a beautiful piece of work, shot on film in a 4:3 ratio, at a gorgeous location in King’s Norton, with a tight, naturalistic script that delves into difficulties around talking about our mental health.
